The name Estella means star. Dictionary.com defines a star as "any of the heavenly bodies, except the moon, appearing as fixed luminous points in the sky at night". Estella who is like a star is like a fixed point to Pip. Pip expects that he will marry her when his benefactor who he believes is Miss Havisham, will let him. Also, like a star Estella is described by Pip as "very and pretty and seemed very proud." (55, Dickens) and also as "beautiful and self-possessed." (56, Dickens). Estella lives up to the reputation of her name, as she is beautiful and very pointed in her remarks.

  1. I agree with your analysis of the name Estella. I found it interesting how you stated that stars are “fixed points”, like Estella is to Pip. I interpret this as meaning that Pip’s life will continue on, but Estella will always hold a permanent place in his thoughts and in his heart. Dickens also makes a couple of comparisons between Estella and stars. The first being, “her light came along the dark passage like a star” (59) and “I saw her pass among the extinguished fires…and go out by a gallery high overhead, as if she were going out into the sky” (64). These comparisons add to the many reasons why Estella “lives up to the reputation of her name” as you stated in your comment.
